Fig. 1. K's Bhindi Masala
When you have neither time nor cooking skills and about 5 spices in your kitchen you really learn to appreciate straightforward recipes, the flavour of vegetables and the value of keeping salt on the table! ;)
This recipe is something my cousin got from his roommate's friend who got it from Sanjeev Kapoor's book. With second-third-hand filtering going on here.. one expects only minimal remnants of the original recipe. However, this dish tastes surprisingly decent! And considering how quickly it got made, this certainly qualifies as a "will-repeat" recipe in my book!
Ingredients:
Onions - 2 medium, finely chopped
Tamarind paste - 1/4 teaspoon diluted with 1 tablespoon of warm water
Bhindi (okra) - 1 bag of frozen chopped or say 2 handfuls fresh bhindi
Green chillies - 1 finely chopped
Red chilly powder - 1 teaspoon
Haldi (turmeric powder) - 1/2 teaspoon
Salt - to taste
Procedure:
1) Saute onions.
2) Add haldi, red chilly powder, chopped green chillies, tamarind paste and salt.
3) Now add bhindi. Fry well, uncovered till the bhindi is tender and well cooked.
I served this with simple dal and rice. Thanks for the recipe, K!!
Sorry for the short and to-the-point posts this month.. bit busy. My rate of posting and blog hopping/commenting is also going to go down this month and the next. Don't mind, I will be checking out your posts, just somewhat quick skims.
Thanks for reading and have a great day, everyone!

sounds interesting as never used tamarind paste in okra curry.
Hey Priya.. yes, I thought so too! Cos other than the tamarind it is like any other bhindi dish. But the tamarind is actually the best part here, I would not skip or substitute it.
Not being abindi fan I try and avoid this veg.But your prep looks wonderful and resulting in a tasty
dish.
Thanks, Nayna! :)
Great one...tamarind will be surprise taste for all

Thanks, Jyothi! Nice to see you here.
I have been wanting to eat bhindi for the longest time now. It has been months and every time i go to buy them they are the worst and old. This is making me crave even more. Looks sooo good!! very unlike i make, but I can just imagine how good this was.

Hey Soma.. if I chance upon good quality fresh bhindi then I am sure to grab them. But usually I just get the frozen chopped ones from the freezer section. Not bad, they just contain quite a few "head" parts. But one gets used to those too! :D
